Hey don’t stress about the pronunciation, Festus. You might hurt yourself. Be hip and just call ‘em ‘Gun Bun’. Seriously. They don’t mind, and frankly they are fed up to here with you butchering it anyway. And no, don’t ask if you can meet Giselle. That’s Bündchen, fool! Nice gunbunGisele.Bundchen.VS.05 thinking, though.

This place is a go-to spot in Sonoma. Good tasting room, nice people, excellent site, yada yada. So go visit. Tell ‘em we sent ya, and get a free…no, no I can’t lie. You’ll likely get nothing but a strange look.

Today we’re talking about a varietal we don’t dish much about, the venerable, temperamental, and sometimes downright bitchy Pinot Noir. The Gundlach Bundschu 2006 Vadasz Vineyards Pinot Noir to be specific. Whew, that’s a mouth full.

This is a medium bodied Pinot, with a light semi-cloudy garnet color to it. It is, like all GB wines I’ve tasted, well made and has a nice structure, with an earthy aroma. On the palette you ask? No not that palette, we’re not painting! Geez. On the palate, you’ll enjoy nice dark cherry flavors with a little…allspice is what I got. Anyway, some hint of holiday spice, subtle tannins and a nice finish. I’d prefer a little more pepper, just a tad, on the front end but other than that this is a solid Pinot that will pair well with lots of dishes, I’d say lamb would be perfect-o. Or just some cheese. Hell, I don’t care if you’re Mother Hubbard (as in ‘all her cupboards were bare…’ Check it, it’s a sick old rhyme) this still makes a nice drinking wine all by itself.

I’d give it an 89 or so on the Wine Spectator 100 point scale. And that’s pretty good! Hint: I know, I know this is hard but try to open this puppy up an hour or so before drinking. It really helps it open up.

Gun Bun makes pretty small batch wines, so they’re a little difficult to get at retail. Even those mouth breathers at K&L typically don’t carry it. Best bet? Go to the Gun Bun site, visit the winery or try Wine Searcher. Goes for about $30 bones.

Thanks John & Janine! Wow, I was so excited to see this posting not just b/c of the kind words for Gun Bun, but also I recognized your awesome masthead immediately as the work of our friend and Bundschu family ‘outlaw’ Mark Ulriksen. Small world. I promise we’ll take good care of J&J fans, no strange looks unless, well, unless they act strangely. FWIW, there are several Bundschus who keep asking to meet Giselle to no avail…
    Thanks again!
