PRO: Happenin' venue, good art, food, bevvies and crowd
CON: Nothing, really
Holy crap, VdV has hit the big time! All this hard labor is finally paying dividends, kittens. How, and better yet why, you ask? Because our little mongrel selves actually got personally invited to the EAT Event at 11 Minna on Monday by the charming Crystal, who runs the show over there. Well, if she doesn't run it yet she should, bitches! She can spot talent, that is fo-sho.
So y'all know 111 Minna, it's the art gallery disguised as a night club.. .or is it a night club designed as an art gallery? Hmmm. Hold on, I just got a migraine. Either way, Minna has been rockin' the SoMa 'hood for years and still hasn't lost its coolness. It'd been a bit since we'd been here, and usually much later than this time around. Due to some previous commitments later Monday eve (I told ya, get friendly with us now or it may be too late!) we had to hit the event early, around 6p. So we were interested in how much more tame the crowd would be than during our typical late-night alcohol-fueled visits have been. Answer: A lot tamer. But not in a bad way, and we're getting a bit 'advanced in the demographic', as they say, to hang with the young 'uns that often anyway.
So first, a little more about this whole EAT thing. First off, it's called EAT. Still with me? And it happens one Monday each month when the gallery room is turned into more of a dining room. At least until 10:30p, then all bets are off. So for these cool little dining events, the chef from The Phoenix Supper Club, Tommy Halverson, whips up some fine vittles, leaning toward the appy side of life. This menu had some good shit too! And recession-priced to boot. Way to go Tommy (Boy). Sorry, one of our favorite movies, I couldn't resist. Basically each dish is between about $4-9.
We chowed down on Truffle Chips ($4), which are fresh home made potato chips with, I think it was Reggiano cheese, truffle and tasty aioli. Next, the Creekstone Sliders ($6 each), nice little burgers with caramelized onions, a great pepper relish on a nice fresh made bun. Just a little fancy in the condiments without overdoing it. Next we had the Chanterelle and Morel Flatbread ($9) a decent size pie with the aforementioned shrooms, truffle oil, some nice spicy arugula on a homemade flat bread. Yummy for da tummy.
Other good lookin' stuff included the Mahi Tacos ($5) and the Carbonera ($9) but like I told ya before, we had other dinner commitments and need to watch our figures. Those VinDivine catsuits show every extra ounce.
Anyhoo, the menu changes each event so don't start sniveling when these dishes aren't served next time around. We're just sayin' that Chef Tommy does it right.
The tunes? I am ashamed. Completely forgot. Hey! This isn't MySpace or some damn music blog, so lay off! It was cool, urban-ish tunes from a local person. I think. Wait! That internet. What would I do without it? I just found the info: David 'DJ' Banks. There. Satisfied?
And while you're roaming around, enjoying your fave bevvie, some great noshes and groovin' to DJ Banks urban sounds (music), there's always some interesting art on the walls, interesting people to chat up and all in all have a great, laid back time of it.This is a very casual and fun event. We're comin' for the next one! If Crystal hasn't rescinded our invitation that is.
Plus 111 Minna has shitloads of other cool events as well, so check it. It's one of the best venues around and tell 'em VinDivine sent ya!
