Hey kittens it's your pizza whores here at VdV. Thought we'd let you know we just had a frozen DiGiorno Pizza. Too bad we had it at Little Star Pizza! Yes,
Little Star, where we'd heard nothing but "dude, if ya want the best
pie in SF ya gotta hit Little Star" blah blah.
So let's be clear - this is the NoPa location on Divisadero. Maybe the one in The Mission is different. We'll go there soon. This is a nice, casual little pizza place, long and skinny with about 16 tables and a bar on the left side. Not a 'joint' 'cuz it's actually pretty nice, with blue and grey walls, cubist paintings, and low lighting, A little dark, they have tiny little lamps on each table. Made it hard to gaze into my babe's bright blue eyes. Also made it kinda hard to get good pics since the iPhone doesn't have a flash (yet).
The place was (as it always is) doin' a solid business. We got seated pretty quickly which was a shocker, and went hog-wild on the menu. We ordered the Spicy Chicken Wings ($9.50), a Deep Dish Classic ($17.50), which our (very nice) server told us was Obama's fave (I guess some place in Missouri does pies that are a complete rip-ff of L-S, and Obama ordered them for a party at The House), and a Thin Crust Cheese w/ Tomato, Onions & Mushrooms ($16).
So I think ya already know what we thought of the pizza, but we'll drone on a bit more anyway. Sorry L-S, we are tough on two things - WIngs and Pizza.
I'm not a huge fan of deep dish pies, but I do appreciate a good one. This Classic pie was simply lacking flavor. I mean, it has sausage, onions, green pepper and mushrooms. How can it not have flavor?! Dunno, but the sauce was very bland, the sausage was a little too greasy and about the only taste we got was from the green bell peppers. The crust was cornmeal-based, and actually the best part of a bad pie - a nice crunch on the outside and a decent bready flavor.
The thin crust? Well, hmmm. It's just kinda 'so what' if you get my drift. For the most part I like a thin crust where if you hold up a slice, it remains semi-rigid for a few seconds before it kinda goes limp (no comments!). This was limp right off the bat, and it wasn't because of the liquid from the ingredients. And as I already complained above, the sauce was flavorless - no spice, no real fresh tomato flavor either. I don't think they're using San Marzanos that's for sure. It's just red goo.
We even boxed these suckers up and drove it over to two pizza-loving foodie friends (and chefs) to taste, and they felt exactly the same way about both pies. So there!
Hey Little Star, contact us and we may even getcha a ticket to NYC for a lesson on the art of thin crust pizza making, then maybe a stop over at Gibo's East in Chicago on the way back for some deep dish bitch-slapping. And you, Obama. I like ya. But coming from Chicago....really?
Oh yeah, amid all the bitching and moaning I almost forgot the wings. Know why? 'Cuz they were forgettable. That's why. They served a decent amount of wings, with a good mix of chick and guy wings, and they were meaty enough, but the sauce....JESUS WHAT IS IT ABOUT LITTLE STAR AND THEIR LAME SAUCES?! Wow. Sorry. Anyway, the sauce was just not that good. Advertised as 'Spicy Wings' the sauce really didn't have any kick, and no redeeming quality that made it stand out from any other average wing you could get anywhere.
Oh yeah, they accept cash only, but do have an ATM machine inside.
So bottom line, we have two sad words for ya: Over Hyped.
