We know, usually the only thing ‘green’ about your weekends is the color of your gills after a night or two of boozin’ it up. But change is good. Sometimes. In this case, at least for an hour or three. I mean, being green is the new black. Wait! We recently proselytized that afternoon drinking was the new black. Hmmm, a quandary. You choose. Anyhoo, scoot (don’t drive) on down here for an eco-conscious good time. Green is sexy. You may even get laid. And while you’re at it there’s some cool stuff and companies to check out, like 3Prong Power Plug In Hybrids, as well as some good veggie/organic snacks and non-veggie bevvies.

What: San Francisco Green Festival
Where: Concourse Exhibition Center (635 8th Street)

Who? What? Where? Well let me clue you in, fool. This is a hot, up and coming Portuguese band. And since we recently returned from Rio, we’re down. They have a groovin’ funky style that mixes some African-based riffs with more new age electronica. And how do they lay it down? A cool combo of euro pop dance hits and hip hop, bitch. Try it, you’ll like it.

This type of event just makes me adore the holiday season so much I almost weep. If this doesn’t get ya in the spirit, you’re emotionally void. OK, we shouldn’t over-hype this. But it is a) beer 2) at fort mason c) to ring in the holidays and catch a mini-buzz. I think that’s good enough. There’ll be about 125 holiday brews from about 100 breweries from the Bay Area and beyond, some munchies, Christmas carolers, a Dickensian town scape, and even a live Santa that you can lap-sit on and recite your xmas list! (OK, there’s beer and munchies. Prolly some tunes too but no other guarantees.)

Let them drink beer! Toronado is one of the best beer bars in all of SF. If you don’t agree you’re on crack. But this is weird. They are actually bringing in Melissa Claire of Melissa Claire’s Kitchen (I don’t know her either) to do a kinda fancy-shmancy seeming six course meal matched with a dozen or more beers. She’ll be serving up stuff like Salmon Three Ways (only 3? Slacker!), Spiced Sweet Potato Bisque, Boney Fingers Braised Boneless Beef RIbs (oohh, almost alliteration), and more. Give it a go, anything at Toronado is gonna be a hoot.

We love Rex Ray. He's super talented plus not all artsy-fartsy weird or stuck up. Just all-in-all a pretty cool seeming guy. Hey I'm not telling you to go on a camping trip with him for a week, we only met him briefly at a Rex Ray exhibition awhile ago. We even won one of his pieces (and I don't mean 'pieces' in a derogatory tone) in a waffle.

Anyhoo, he just has a great, unique and fun style that makes ya happy. And this guy is big-time! His art gets snapped up by big-name museums and collectors and he's been retained (is that the right word for this?) by other artists including David Bowie, Radiohead and that freak Björk for album covers and posters.

But not even VdV can say it (or spray it) as well as Sydney Payton, former director of Denver's MCA, describes Ray’s
work: "It exudes beauty with a subversive edge that stems from an
attitude grounded in alternative subculture. He was an early admirer of
punk and new wave music. Music holds a special place in his life…Drawing inspiration
from his acknowledged influences— organic and hard-edged abstraction,
pattern and textile design, and Op Art—Ray playfully combines these
formalist concepts, gracefully bridging the gap between fine and
applied art…"

Wow. We need to take lessons in art-speak!

Big weekend at Shoreline with these guys and the Blink 182 + Weezer + Chester French show Sunday! The (gay? Just curious) boys from Vegas spew talent, and with their late 2008 release of Day & Age, their 4th album, they keep on keepin' on. With epic tracks like Mr. Brightside and Smile Like You Mean It to newer cuts from Day & Age including Human and Spaceman, they'll blow ya away. They'll kill ya. Plus they sound good live.
No worries you sea sick scalawags! The ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien is permanently docked at Pier 45, so if ya get a little queasy (of course not from your beer intake) or can't find your sea legs you can always hit dry land.

If you want a nice, civilized break from all that mayhem, take a break and head to Golden Gate Park for a little culture on Sunday. Frisbees will give way to falsettos, blankets will be accompanied by
baritones and moms with strollers will hobnob with maestros in Golden
Gate Park as San Francisco Chronicle Presents Opera in the Park.

Who's gonna be belting out the vocals? Stars like With fall season stars, including Sondra Radvanovsky, Brandon Jovanovich, WAIT. Let's not waste our time pretending we all know who all thee people are. You have never heard of them and I have no patience to type. OK?

Suffice it to say these people have sick talent, Golden Gate Park is gorgeous, it's free! and what a nice way to spend a little time on Sunday. Opera soothes the soul, people. Give it a go! Yes, they will be selling booze there.

We are so f'ing happy this trio (we're talkin' Blink, not the 3 bands above) got their shit together and got the group back together. Hope they're as good as they were back in the day. They haven't released an album since their Greatest Hits in '05 and those don't really count. But ya gotta love their raw sound, clever lyrics and overall spunk. And acquaint your bad self with Chester French, a hot new band led by a couple Harvard dudes. Don't hold that against them, they can Lay It Down, kittens. Plus Weezer is a fun live show as well so I think this show gets the VdV guarantee of a rockin' good time.

This year they do have a pretty decent line-up, including Incubus & Thievery Corporation on Friday, Black-Eyed Peas and Marz Volta on Saturday (we hope the Peas sound better live than last time we heard them), and M.I.A. and Modest Mouse on Sunday.
Admit it, we can all use some more culture. And isn't it cool party conversation to drop that you just saw a screening of a hot new short or documentary? Well, here's your chance, so head on over to sunny…OK beautiful at least…Cavallo Point at the foot of the GG Bridge this weekend for some. Culture, that is. Hit a 'Special Secret Screening Party' (some tickets still remain) that so secret even we at VdV don't have full details!

This is the 'other' street fair that occurs on Folsom Street. Meaning, no (or at least fewer) Prince Alberts than the one coming up in September. This Street Fest is all about good street food, and there's also a beer & cocktail garden, as well as music and street art to be had as well. And the kicker – proceeds benefit La Cocina, which supports 'food entrepreneurs' mainly women from culturally diverse and immigrant communities. So go make a pig out of yourself and get a warm and fuzzy for supporting a good cause. It's a win-win.God I hate myself for using that phrase…

My how time flies. Perry, ya don't look a day over 60. So help celebrate the success of a very cool guy and an SF Institution. Head to the original Perry's location on Union Street for all the festivities – celebrity bartenders, live music, good food and drink, and it being Union Street at least 1/2 a chance for a random hookup. If that's what you're into, that is. So dodge the d-bags and go!

Which hot dude player has the best serve goin’ on? WTF cares! Y’all are here for the bikinis, don’t try to fool us. And since Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh aren't participating, some of the others have a chance at a trophy and the weather's gonna co-operate. And there will be sand on Pier 30, ya gotta witness that. This event is a kick, you can sneak out for bevies at Red’s and Hi Dive, lotsa six packs (beer too), sun and fun. My big question is when are they gonna bring the Red Bull Flugtag back here?!

What exactly is an 'artisanal' cocktail anyway? I mean, I kinda get artisinal cheese. Kind of. But cocktails? Hmmm. Anyhoo, it's alcohol. And it sounds like they're gonna be mixin' up some of those fancy drinks. I'm in. So let's not get caught up in the vernacular, shall we? Get yer drink on with a couple pros – Scott Beattie, the author of Artisanal Cocktails will school ya on how to make his signature bevvies – Blackberry Lick and the Westside Bellini.

Lou Bustamante from St. George Spirits & Hangar One will be around to talk about the distilling process and other cool (really!) stuff. We love Hangar One so might just have to get this dude's autograph. Hell, after drinking enough Hangar One Lime to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool he should ask me for mine!

You'll get a couple cocktails, some snacks, St. George and Hangar One tastes, and the greatest gift of all: a valuable learning experience that will make you the hit at your next party.

You can screen some film shorts, witness the renowned Burning Man 'alter master' Shrine build (and hopefully burn) a sacred Bird House. Chow down on some snacks from 'Lil Skillet. Food. Wine @ Union Square SF

This is the event of the (very busy) weekend. Unless you don’t like food. Or wine. Or chefs. And if that's you, WTF are you reading this blog? So this is the place to plant your butts this weekend. Four fun and fat-filled days of manging, quaffing and people watching on Union Square. Plus the whole shebang supports some kick-ass causes like the SF Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, Golden Gate Restaurant Association Scholarship Foundation (dang guys could you please shorten that or come up with a cool acronym), and Project Open Hand. So open those wallets, support some great causes, feel all warm and fuzzy about yourself, have fun and write it all off!

And if you’re a chef groupie (we know you’re out there, we hear the stories) this is your nirvana. So stuff your beautiful face and enjoy/. We’re gonna be there decked out in full VdV regalia so don’t be shy. Come on over, introduce yourself and let’s do shots!

We’re jamming, were jammin’ I wanna jam it with you…wait, I think that’s Bob. Oh well, it’s all in the fam. I like Ziggy even though he was a pitchman for Revlon or some other cosmetics company for a stint. Hey, good $, hot women I guess ya can’t knock it. But still…a reggae dude repping a lipstick company? I dunno.

Anyhoo, we saw him perform a killer show at Greek Theater a few years back. Excellent, and the contact highs are free – bonus! If you haven’t been to Mountain Winery you really should give it a go. Plus it should be a beautiful night there. You can grab dinner there as well. And feel free to pitch a tent (no not that kind, dirty) on their grounds if you need to. Tell 'em VdV sent ya!

The Crawl will start at McTeagues Saloon @ 4PM. Stop by their booth and pick up a wristband and you'll have open access to all of the drink specials at every bar. Here’s the starting lineup:

As much of a PITA as it is to get to Shoreline (in my humble opinion…they really need a hi-speed monorail straight to the venue) this will be awesome, the weekend will be a sunny dee-lite and you’ll get a chance to listen to and experience some world-class bangers like Nas, Big Boi, Common, Busta Rhymes (!), Ice Cube, Cypress Hill and more. Kevlar vests optional.

This place gets a little whipped up occasionally, but during the daytime it’s pretty chill. And if it’s gonna be nice anywhere in SF this weekend it’ll be down by Kelly’s in Mission Bay.

The summer mayhem continues! Ya got bands inside, outside and on the deck. This place gets rockin', and is sure to leave you with a fuzzy ‘noggin for Monday AM!

Pull a flashback and spend an evening at Dolores Park watching everyone’s fave movie Pretty In Pink (come on, admit it…except it’s not Godfather 1 or 2…or Point Break…or Weird Science) oh WTF just go watch it! It’ll be fun and, did you know this nugget of information?

The ending of the movie was changed. Originally, Andie was supposed to
end up with Duckie. However, test audiences reacted negatively to this
finish. And due to Molly
Ringwald being sick during the filming of the first ending, the
director didn't get all of the shots he wanted, and the editing was
unsatisfactory. So, the end was reshot, and in the final version, Andie
and Blane reconcile. Ta da!

Anyhoo, PIP is all about..JHC if ya don’t know yet, just forget it. So fill up the cooler (cans not bottles people) some munchies, a blankie and your squeeze and chill to the Pink.

So hopefully they don’t get all whiny on us. Teething and all that. Waaaahhh! The gift you should bring? A ravenous hunger and $55…ok since you read VdV make it $75 since there is no way you’ll pass on the optional wine pairings. Word.
