Biig House Red

VdV Rating: 2.5

Yeah I know. It can get pretty mundane with all that Mouton Rothchild, Krug and Silver Oak passing its way through those lovely taste buds of yours. Sometimes ya just need to shake it up, get back to your roots. No, not that far back! We’re not talking Annie Green Springs here.

We’re talking value wines. I like these wines, ‘cuz there’s really no reason for most of us to pay through the nose every time we want to put our feet up, listen to some groovin’ jazz and chill with a decent glass of vino;)

So today’s pick? Big House Red. “But why?”, you ask? Because it’s not just some pedestrian, cheap Cabernet. This puppy is a blend of some unique varietals including Syrah, Grenache, Carignane, Mourvedre, Dolcetto, Barberra and more. Lots of European grape types. But this ain’t no fancy-shmancy Euro wine. It’s all from Monterey County. This is basically a ‘throw the kitchen sink in’ type of blend. And it works! And it is under $10 to boot.

“But what will I experience?”, you ask? You’re gonna get knocked right in the ‘ol noggin with bright, juicy ripe raspberry and blackberry tastes, along with some pepper on the back end and solid tannins that provide good structure.

This winery is called Big House ‘cuz it’s close to Soledad State Correctional Facility in Monterey County. Yep…the hoosegow, clink, ‘Uncle Jim’s home away from home’, however you want to refer to it. Kinda funny, check out the site too. A little cute
for its own good but worth a visit.

You can find this vino all over the place for about $10 or less, or you can buy it online at or at Wine Library for only $6.99! Woo Hoo! And I will refrain from saying anything about it being ‘a steal’. You’re welcome.
